I am not writting this article because today is Valentine’s day in Romania. No. This article is a reminder of what love really means.
What does it mean?
1 Corinthians 13:4-7 says:
4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
Love is not just a nice gesture we do for someone occasionally, like some people do today, buy a gift/flowers and go out. What would love be if we would all show it just one day a year? It’s a picture I think no one would like to see or even imagine. We were created to love and be loved.
It means loving someone unconditionally, to accept, to forgive. Usually we do, but whenever a fight or misunderstanding comes up we leave love aside and get angry. You can’t “pause” love, it should be there in hard times, in misunderstandings and even in a fight. You probably think I am just a teenager, what do I know about love? But the Bible presents it very clear.
Love means accepting someone with all their imperfections, defects, even in sickness and hard times. It should come from a pure heart and grow even bigger every day. It is easy to love when everything goes right, but it should be the same daily. I agree, it’s impossible to avoid a fight, we are humans, we are imperfect. But it’s not imposible to love even when things go wrong. That’s what we tend to forget.
It means putting others needs above your own. Loving them more than you love yourself. Ready to give your life for them. You might say I’m exaggerating, but it is not impossible to love that way. That’s what love means. And Jesus proved it! He came on this earth and died for us so that we could have eternal life. He loved us that much! And He left us with an impulse: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” I know, it’s not easy to love everybody like that, there are people in our lives who we don’t like, but God gives you the power to love like that, all you have to do is love Him first, and He will fill your heart with love for others.
There are a million things I can write about love. But one important thing we miss is loving someone who doesn’t deserve it. If you take some time to think, there were days in your life when you too didn’t deserve to be loved by others. We don’t deserve to be loved by God, but we are. So why not do the same with the people around us?
You might say “Yeah, well, they don’t love me back. Why should I?” I’ll just give you a simple answer: because that’s what Jesus would do. Every frozen heart can be melted with a little affection. And by the way, did you know love can save a life?
That’s the way I see love. A blessing, a gift, a powerful feeling. And that’s what love is. Remember to love unconditional, no matter what circumstances and at the right time you too will be loved unconditionally.
